Seeing as that Berserk very temporarily ended its hiatus and released a new chapter, I decided to review it in order to sharpen my brain molecules, because I don't quite have anything better to do rn. The most recent chapters have been focusing rather intensely on Griffith. Most readers are sick of getting only Griffith chapters (1- Because everybody hates Griffith for selling the souls of Guts and friends, and 2- Because Casca literally just overcame her state of psychological regression and they want to know what happens next), but I for one love Griffith and the plethora of chapters centered around him.
This is my first Berserk chapter review, so I feel as though a brief synopsis regarding the plot up until this point in the narrative is necessitated for those poor souls who are clueless about the horrendous events that led to this point. Otherwise you'll be very, very, very lost haha. Feel free to skip the synopsis if you already know the story because it's not actually a part of the chapter review itself; I do, however, deem it necessary to tact onto the review in order to close any and all gaps (I'm OCD; be nice to me).
-- Synopsis --
Guts (pretty much the unluckiest character of all time) joins a mercenary group, led by a man named Griffith (an eccentric, popular extremist with illusions of grandeur). Guts eventually decides to leave the group but Griffith is basically like, 'Lol you're not going anywhere boi; come catch these hands.' then Guts is basically like, 'Lol, you thought. Hold this L,' and he beats Griffith fair and square.
Immediately after, my boi Griffith has a panic attack, an existential crisis, a psychological breakdown, and falls into an emotional frenzy because it was his first time losing at anything. Griffith sleeps with the princess in a vain attempt to reaffirm his proclaimed dominance but the King finds out, arrests him, and tortures him. Guts & friends save Griffith a year later but at this point, he is beyond broken both physically and psychologically. Griffith sells the souls of all his comrades, including Guts and his lover Casca, to demons in order to become one of the quintuple God Hand (basically a demon god).
Griffith practically destroys Casca's mind and demonizes Guts and Caska's unborn baby; only Guts and Caska survive the eclipse, but are forever cursed. Guts wants revenge. Even whilst mentally impaired, Caska gives birth to her baby but said baby has been corrupted beyond humane recognition. Griffith implants his soul inside the demon baby, rebirths himself via said baby, restructures the world, and creates the ultimate empire known as Falconia. Griffith is betrothed to Charlotte (the current Queen of Midland), making him the heir to throne and the future King. Casca finally awakens from her mental stupor, and that's where we are now.
-- End of Synopsis --
The first half of the chapter begins in the midst of a meeting amongst the nobles and aristocrats of Falconia. They discuss territorial expansion, socio-economic regulation, and hierarchical displacement following a victorious plight against the hostile giants. Everyone praises and applauds Griffith for defeating the giants in battle (because those senile raisins were terrified of and completely defenseless against said giants). They also delve into mobile networking (transportation), militaristic advancements, and financially logarithmic procecures. Personally, I love all of the politically contributional aspects/angles of this chapter. I like perceiving into the exact dynamic and socioeconomic flow of a nation/empire. Foreign importation & exportation, regional immigration & emigration policies, and cultural reformation are all things that interest me, because all of these are metaphorical columns necessary for maintaining a functioning society regardless of the era. However, I can understand other readers' disinterest and general disapproval of the chapter's focus since there is no action- there is only build-up. No swords are swinging, no arrows are shooting, nobody is getting rekt in this chapter unlike in the previous; with a naked eye, a person only sees political jargon being projected to discuss confusing topics such as agriculture, systematical education, and medium-sized social tension with a lesser probability of occuring in the first place.
TL;DR: Basically, what's happening here is Griffith is pleasantly surprising all of the higher-ups with his proposals of groundbreaking ideas which will, in theory, reap major pay-offs for their country- not to mention he is riding off of the blazing heels of his very recent victories in several impossible battles. The nobles simply can't believe he is so unbelievably prolific and helpful in every way imaginable.
In fact, at some point Charlotte abruptly says something about structuring a national foster care system for orphans even though she has absolutely no idea how to go about creating one (honestly, I totally hate Charlotte's capabilities as a national leader because they are practically nonexistent. Bloodline limits are the only cause for her being Queen since she undoubtedly has no sense of direction, politically speaking. She is a likeable sweetheart though :sparkling_heart: ). All of the executives sitting at the table are basically like, 'Lol, I know you're the Queen, but that's a terrible idea. We don't have enough money to do something like that. Why are you even here?'
To everybody's surprisal, Griffith not only supports the idea but somehow manages to create a perfect plan for it to be properly executed on the spot. Although the plan is foolproof and encompasses equal distribution of every single aspect of the country's assets, the selfish aristocrats say that educating commonfolk on how to prosper in life (even just orphans and those of the younger generation) will create cracks in the social hierarchy which will 'grow into fissures' and eventually lead to a harder to tame country, or even the possible usurpation of their goverment. If you ask me, the higher-ups are just scared that they might possibly lose the ability to rule over their citizens as sheeple if they become too smart to remotely control and, by extent, develop too much individuality.
Griffith's plan is to basically utilize the amalgamated power of each and every one of the citizens in order to maximize production and therefore increase their assets. In this case, it would be better for the people to have their own sense of productive direction so that more businesses can be made, more technological advancements can be made, and larger economic escalation can be made. Territorial expansion through militaristic force would prove itself vital since geographical reclamation = explosive agricultural augmentation and more wide-scale structural development.
I.e.: bigger business/military = more cash flow.
Keep in mind this is just my own interpretation of things and I'm putting this all in my own words so obviously the context differs from the actual text itself. All the same, I am highlighting the key aspects of things here to make it easier for you to digest. I myself think that the plan is really genius and ingenious, especially since Griffith goes as far as proposing that they incorporate the Kushan refugees into the military in order to truly magnify growth in every way.
So that summarizes the first half relatively well. I will say that the second half isn't nearly as informational though, so there isn't all that much to cover. As the meeting comes to a steadfast conclusion and everyone goes their separate ways, the nobles discuss Griffith's behavior and his declaration of a 'Second Empire' to one another when he isn't around. More importantly, I don't think that anyone really understands what Griffith is really after in all of this. He isn't the type to perform charity work for others with no personal gain whatsoever- that much is obvious. Helping out the citizens will eventually help him out, but Griffith is out for something much more sinister than financial gain.
Everyone is so caught up in their own misguided, grandiose fantasies of him that they are, in turn, blinded by them and cannot see what is coming to them, let alone evade appropriately. Even Minister Foss (an old grape-shaped man who tried to assassinate Griffith once) seems to be caught in the spider's web when he indirectly speaks of being 'intoxicated' by the illusion [of Griffith]. The citizens have all become so reliant upon Griffith that they don't even bother questioning his intentions or even consider the possibility that he has some seriously major, ulterior motives. This is just my own naturally flawed foresight ofc, so there is always a possibility of my hypothesis being incorrect.
After that, Charlotte thanks Griffith for backing her up when she was clearly unprepared to defend her proposal during the meeting. Sonia gets in her feels because her senpai, Griffith doesn't notice her and instead continues to show love to Charlotte. I love her reaction too; the comedy in Berserk has always been rather subtle and indirect overall.
Finally, I'd say that this chapter pretty much confirms a long time suspicion/theory amongst fans. The theory is that not just Griffith but also the Moonlight Boy (a weird superboy who literally appears out of nowhere only on full moons) are using the same body as a physical vessel. The idea is that both the soul of Griffith and the Moonlight Boy reside inside the body of what was formerly Guts and Caska's corrupted demon baby. 2 souls inside one body. Since Griffith is way more powerful than the Moonlight Boy, I'm pretty sure he has full control of the vessel except on nights with full moons. If you are confused, don't worry, so is just about everybody else :joy: .
I'm thinking the theory is confirmed because Griffith's hair seems to turn black (the same color as the Moonlight Boy) in the center of one of his locks of hair at the very end of the chapter. He jumps out the window too, so he'll probably go check up on Guts as well as Casca who is STILL FRIGGIN' SCREAMING in the next chapter.
That's my review for this chapter. I hope you liked it, but if not, okay.
